AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

The study examines the availability and utilization of instructional
materials on the teaching and learning of Mathematics in Secondary  school in Odeda Local Government. It was
discovered that some schools lack instructional materials in teaching of
mathematics. Relevant literature on the identified variables on the study were
extensively reviewed. The descriptive survey research design was used for the
study. The sample consisted of fifty (50) students randomly selected from five
secondary schools in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. The major
instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire with four rating scale.
Data obtained in the study were analyzed using simple frequent percentage
count. The results of the analysis showed that there is an effects of instructional
materials on the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools. It
was suggested among others that Mathematics teachers should be encouraged to
attend seminars on modern trends in the teaching of mathematics.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0      INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND
TO THE STUDY

        The use of instructional
materials in teaching and learning process of mathematics in the classroom have
been neglected in most school, both primary and secondary throughout Nigeria
most primary and secondary teachers are yet to appreciate the importance of
teaching materials in the process of teaching and learning. There are group
always conceive instructional media as synonymous with the chalkboard, but
current innovation in educational technology have shown that there is need for
this group of teachers to look at learning resources as something  more than teacher-chalkboard relationship.

        Soyemi (2000)
it is a known fact that mathematics has a great impact to play in the
institution, as a result there is a need to pay adequate attention at the grass
road i.e the secondary  school. Infact,
the usefulness of mathematics cannot be over emphasized in secondary  school because of extensive value acquire
from the study.

        As a result of
this, efforts must be made by all stake holders to proffer solutions to the
present yearly trends to mass failure in mathematics examination in order to
help the country from the present situation by making it prepared to the
challenges of the futureand the and new millennium.

        Thus, this
study is aimed at having a critical appraisal to effect of instructional
materials on the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools.
Nigeria national policy on education (1981) recognized the importance and part
of educational media in teaching learning situation. Yet, mathematics teaches
don’t feel concerned about the use of instructional materials for effective
mathematics learning. Indeed, it is a fact that calls for a close attention
doing most mathematics teachers bear a type of “I don’t care” attitude to issue
of instructional materials in their daily lessons.

        Whatever
reasons that may be attributed to their non-challant attitudes to the issue of instructional
materials. It must be realized and called to mind that one of the major causes
of our student poor performance in mathematics in secondary  school in particular is the neglect of
educational media of teachers of teaching mathematics concept.

1.2   STATEMENT
OF PROBLEM

        It Is obvious
that many schools lack adequate mathematics teaching and instructional
materials in Nigeria societies as a result of non-paying attention.

        Certain factors
that constitute to this, among them are:

Mass
failure in mathematics by student. Some mathematics teachers lack certain
skills required for teaching. There is shortage of mathematics learning and
teaching materials in secondary schools. High percentage of pupils shows little
or no interest to studying or learning mathematics.

1.3   PURPOSE
OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this is to:

i.
Examine
the instructional materials as it pertain meaning and types

ii.
Investigate
into the use of instructional materials in few selected secondary schools.

iii.
Examine
critically problem associated with teaching and learning of mathematics in
selected secondary schools.

iv.
Determine
the effects of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of
mathematics.

v.
To
examine critically the factors that prevents teachers in using instructional
materials in the classroom.

1.4   SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE STUDY

The essence of this study is to have a
critical examination on the effect of instructional materials on the teaching
and learning of mathematics in secondary schools.

Among those that will benefit and hoe
they will benefit from this study are-:

1.  Students that are studying mathematics
at various levels of education in all institution of learning.

2.  Mathematics teachers as well as parents
and significant others. This study serves as guidelines in deciding the strategies,
instructional material or media, which could be used in motivating pupils and
teachers in teaching and learning of mathematics thereby enhance the
performance of both learners and teachers of mathematics.

1.5   RESEARCH
QUESTIONS

This study attempt to provide answers to the
following research questions:

1.  What are the constraints posed to the
effect of learning mathematics in terms of availability of textbook?

2.  What are the problems in the provision
of materials for teaching and learning of mathematics?

3.  What are the parental attitudes towards
provisions of instructional materials for mathematics in secondary schools?

1.6   RESEARCH
HYPOTHESIS

        This study
attempts to provide answers to the following research question.

Ho1: Parental
attitude has no significant effect on learning of mathematics by pupils in secondary
schools.

Ho2: There
is no significant relationship between instructional materials and effective
teaching and learning of mathematics.

Ho3:Socio-economic
background of the pupils has no significant effecton the teaching and learning
of mathematics by pupils in secondary
school.

Ho4:The
sex of pupils has no significant effect on the teaching of mathematics in secondary
schools.

1.7   LIMITATIONS
OF THE STUDY

        The project
work examine critically meant dimensions of instructional materials in studying
teaching and learning process (meaning and illustration).

        It concerns
writer-evaluation of the influences or effect of instructional materials in
Nigeria secondary schools. It will also investigate into the extent of the use
of instructional materials by Nigeria mathematics teachers.

        It must be
pointed out that due to limited time and other materials the research could
only be carried out in some schools in OdedaLocal Government Area of OgunState with
particular reference to the secondary schools.

1.8   DEFINITION
OF TERMS

In this study, operational definition
are used .

1.  Effects: this can be seen as the basic wants
that are sufficient or insufficient, that is been negative or positive. It is
also the process whereby a change produced an action or an impression.

2.  Materials: this can be seen as the tools need for
basic hinges: the instrument need to act before something must be well done.

3.  Teaching: it is the ability to process knowledge
on someone, that is impacting knowledge on one another.

4.  Mathematics: this is a subject course that involve
calculation, measurement, construction, differentiating, statistical e.t.c of a
mankind, however is a scientist subject.

5.  Secondary  school: this is a stage of learning whereby a child begins to learn
outside the house. It normally called first begin stage or pre-maturity stage
of learning.

The PIP-DCG approach for Medicare + Choice, also inpatient only, soon followed.
