The actress, whose family roots stretch to Native Americans in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Portugal and China, made her acting breakthrough with her first film (Moana). in which she played the role of the titlecharacter. At the time, she was still living with her mother in Mililani, Hawaii, and was a freshman at Kamehameha Schools campus in Kapālama, where she was part of her school’s glee club.

In 2016, Auli starred in Animated Film and received her Annie Awards for Outstanding Performance, Voice Actor in an Animated Feature Film Production and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists Award for Best Animated Woman. She was also nominated for Best Voice Performance by the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association and Kids’ Choice Awards for Favorite Frenemies (with Dwayne Johnson). In 2017, she was nominated for Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie: Fantasy Actress and Choice Movie: Breakout Star (the latter she won).
In February 2017, the rising star landed another role, this time in the pilot for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) drama. Regrettably , the series, which premiered on March 13, 2018, was pulled from NBC on May 15, 2018 due to low ratings.
