Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinettist, composer, and bandleader who was best known for his work with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. Shaw was also a published author, having written both fiction and non-fiction. Shaw, who was widely regarded as “one of jazz’s greatest clarinettists,” was the leader of one of the most popular big bands in the United States during the late 1930s and early 1940s. He made many successful recordings, but he was probably best remembered for his 1938 performance of Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine,” which was released on the Columbia label. Shaw and his fledgeling band had been in relative obscurity for more than two years before to the publication of “Beguine,” and after the release of the album, he rose to prominence as a big pop musician in a very short period of time. The album went on to become one of the most important records of the period. As a result of his restlessness in the music world, Shaw was also an early proponent of what would come to be known as Third Stream music, which fused aspects of classical music with jazz forms and traditions. He also recorded with small jazz ensembles that he assembled from the ranks of the numerous large bands that he commanded throughout the years. While in the US Navy from 1942 to 1944, he led a morale-building band that toured the South Pacific during the turmoil of World War II, and after his release in 1944, he returned to the service and commanded another band until he retired in 1945. Following the dissolution of that ensemble, he started to devote more time to other pursuits and progressively retreated from the realm of professional music and significant fame, but he remained a prominent influence in popular music and jazz until he officially retired from music in 1954.
