Arkansas Treasurer Mark Lowery Remembered for Dedicated Public Service

Arkansas State Treasurer Mark Lowery, a respected Republican leader, passed away this morning at the age of 66, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service. The news of his passing was announced by his office today. Lowery’s daughter, Erin Lowery, shared that her father was surrounded by family and passed away peacefully. The sudden loss comes just after Lowery announced his plans to retire on September 30.

In March, Lowery suffered a stroke, and later in mid-June, he experienced a more severe stroke. These health challenges led him and his family to make the difficult decision to retire to focus on his well-being. He was known for his commitment to public service and served as the State Treasurer since January 10, succeeding Dennis Milligan, who now serves as the State Auditor.

Stephen Bright, chief of staff at the Office of the Treasurer, expressed deep sadness over the unexpected loss. He described Lowery as an incredible leader and a humble public servant, and the news of his passing has left the entire staff devastated. The office requested that the public keep Lowery’s family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Lowery earned a master’s degree in communications from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 2000, which laid the foundation for his successful career.

Throughout his life, Lowery held various positions, including editor of the Maumelle Monitor and the Sherwood Voice. He also taught communications at the University of Central Arkansas and Henderson State University. Additionally, from 2003 to 2011, he served as the lobbyist and executive director of the Arkansas chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

As the State Treasurer, Lowery was responsible for overseeing the state treasury’s investment portfolio, valued at approximately $11 billion. He also played an essential role as a board member for significant entities such as the Arkansas Public Employees Retirement System, the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System, the Arkansas State Highway Employees Retirement System, and the Arkansas Development Finance Authority.

Lowery’s dedication to public service and his contributions to Arkansas politics will be remembered and honored by those who had the privilege to work with him.
