Arie Luyendyk Jr., who was brought to America by his family at the age of 3, was born in the Netherlands to Arie and Mieke Luyendyk. He spent his childhood years in Brookfield, Wisconsin, where he lived with his sister Maida.
The younger twins of Luyendyk are Alec and Luca. He completed his high school education at Desert Mountain High School in 2000.
For the 2007–2008 season, Luyendyk competed as the “rookie driver” for A1 Team Netherlands in the A1 Grand Prix World Cup of Motorsports. Throughout the season, he showed promise, finishing fifth in the training session at Round 5 in Taupo, New Zealand.
After that, Luyendyk returned to AGR-AFS Racing to race in the Firestone Indy Lights Series as Raphael Matos’ teammate.
At Chicagoland Speedway’s season finale in 2008, he finally broke through as he outran Matos on a late-race restart to take home his maiden series victory.
With an astonishing total of five podium finishes in 2008, Luyendyk finished fourth overall in the Championship standings.
In 2010, Luyendyk made a part-time comeback to Indy Lights and participated in the Freedom 100 for Andersen Racing and three subsequent oval races for Alliance Motorsports. He did particularly well in Chicagoland, finishing sixth.
