The show focused on the human-angel hybrids called the Shadowhunters. These mythical creatures are tasked with protecting the human world from the dark forces of nature.

The fantasy series is based on the best-selling novel series The Mortal Instruments created by American author Cassandra Clare. The book series is divided into six parts, titled City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire.

The Mortal Instruments follows Clary Fray/Fairchild, a Shadowhunter initially believed to be a mundane/human being. Clary must save her mother Jocelyn Fairchild from her evil father Valentine Morgenstern.

As Clary explores the supernatural world around her, she befriends other Shadowhunters like Jace Herondale, Isabelle Lightwood, and Alec Lightwood.

However, as they work together to find Clary’s mom Jocelyn, the two start falling for each other and have a romantic kiss on Clary’s birthday.

At the end of City of Bones, Wayland and Fray’s romance comes to a halt when Valentine reveals that Clary and Jace are both his children. Initially, Jace believes that his father is Michael Wayland. But, at the end of the first book Valentine mentions that he merely disguised himself as Wayland to raise Jace as his son.

The pair had plans to travel around the world once the war against Valentine was over. However, when Maryse Lightwood steps down as the head of the New York Institute, the couple was voted to serve as the new head of the institute.

Herondale and Fray commence their relationship in 2007. They eventually get engaged in 2012.

What Are Shadowhunters?

Shadowhunters, also called Nephilim, are a mixed breed consisting of humans with angel blood. These creatures have lived in the Shadow World along with Downworlders for more than a thousand years.

Their primary purpose is to protect the Shadow World from other evil creatures while also keeping their existence a secret from the human world. Although they have the powers of an angel, Shadowhunters are still mortal and are not immune from aging.

As per legends, the Shadowhunters were created after 1000 AD to protect the human world from demons. A crusader named Jonathan is believed to be the first Shadowhunter.

After human existence is threatened by the demons, Jonathan summons the Angel Raziel and begs him to save humanity. Impressed with his honesty, Raziel mixed his and Jonathan’s blood in the Mortal Cup and let him drink the mixture. Jonathan became the first Shadowhunter after drinking Raziel’s blood.

In addition to the powers, Jonathan also received the three Mortal Instruments from Raziel. When combined, the three Mortal Instruments can summon the Angel Raziel once.

Following Jonathan, many more humans drank the mixture and became Shadowhunters. The powers were also passed on to their descendants.

In 2007, Valentine Morgenstern uses the Mortal Instruments to summon the Angel Raziel. He intends to destroy the existing Shadowhunters or at least who rejected his plan to wipe out the Downworlders. He even raises a demon army to fight a war for him and orders them to attack Alicante. A battle called the Mortal War is fought between the opposing. Valentine is killed by Raziel after Clary cleverly changes the name of the summoner to herself.

As Valentine could no longer order Raziel, he is eventually killed by the angel. The books and TV series follow the events preceding and immediately after the Mortal War.

In the end, the Shadowhunters race is safe, and the protagonists Clary and Jace finally get engaged after a series of mishaps.
