Are ferritin and iron levels the same thing

What is the difference between ferritin and iron levels?

What is the difference between iron and ferritin? Iron is an important mineral present in red blood cells that carries oxygen to cells in the body. Ferritin on the other hand is a protein that stores iron and releases iron when the body needs it.

Which is more important iron or ferritin?

Ferritin is, therefore, a good indicator of how much iron is stored within your body with low levels indicating iron deficiency anaemia. Approximately one-quarter of the total iron in the body is stored as ferritin.

Can ferritin be low and iron be normal?

Lower than normal results

In early stages of iron deficiency anemia, your body may have a low amount of ferritin but a normal amount of iron in the blood and will still be able to make healthy red blood cells.

Why is my ferritin high but iron normal?

Higher than normal ferritin levels can mean you have too much iron in your body. Conditions that cause increased iron levels include liver disease, alcohol abuse, and hemochromatosis, a disorder that can lead to cirrhosis, heart disease, and diabetes.

Does B12 affect ferritin levels?

Our study shows that serum ferritin and transferrin saturation have a greater effect on the amount of CD34+ cells collected from donors than serum vitamin B12 and folate levels.

What level of ferritin is considered anemic?

If symptoms are in accordance with iron deficiency, the patient should be considered iron deficient at least up to a serum ferritin concentration of 100 μg/L, or even much higher, if the patient has an inflammatory condition, kidney disease or fatty liver 2, 3.

Should I worry about high ferritin levels?

If a ferritin test shows higher than normal levels, it could indicate that you have a condition that causes your body to store too much iron. It could also point to liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, other inflammatory conditions or hyperthyroidism.

How do you fix high ferritin levels?

Dietary changes

avoiding supplements that contain iron. avoiding supplements that contain vitamin C, as this vitamin increases iron absorption. reducing iron-rich and iron-fortified foods. avoiding uncooked fish and shellfish.

Can high ferritin be benign?

This mutation does not seem to result in any change in function of the ferritin molecule and the patients are therefore asymptomatic. This is called benign hyperferritinaemia. This is a diagnosis that can only be made by excluding other causes of a raised ferritin.
