Are all hyenas born male

Indeed, Pliny says, the critter is “popularly believed to be bisexual and to become male and female in alternate years.” In Aesop’s fable “The Hyenas,” they “change their relationship each year.” Even Ernest Hemingway called the hyena a “hermaphroditic self-eating devourer of the deceased, trailer of calving cows, ham-stringer, …

Both female and male hyenas have testes and a member. And for both sexes, the member goes erect around female hyena. … In actual fact, the female ‘penis’ is actually an elongated clitoris, so large that in biology it is referred to as a pseudo-penis. Female hyenas urinate, mate, and even give birth through the appendage.

The females have higher levels of testosterone than the males. That hormone causes them and their pseudo member to grow larger, also making them the more dominant relationship.

Clown Fish. Clown fish are all born male, but that doesn’t mean they simply do without female counterparts. Rather, some — the most dominant males — turn into females (a process known as sequential hermaphroditism).

Hyenas usually bear litters of two to four cubs, but sadly about 60% of the cubs suffocate on their way out. The mothers are also in danger as the birth canal is only an inch in diameter, often making the birthing process fatal, as evidenced by the high death rate for first-time mothers.

Considering the female’s social dominance over males and her bizarrely masculinized genitalia, sexual coercion is impossible in hyena society. If the female is not keen to mate with a particular male, then he’s just plain out of luck.

After a gestation of around three months, female hyenas give birth to two to four young, according to ADW. Baby hyenas are called cubs. Mothers in a clan will share the responsibility of nursing each other’s young and other members of the can may bring food to the den for the cubs.
