Her full name is Anna Wintour, OBE (pronounced /w?nt?r/; born 3 November 1949), and she has been the English editor-in-chief of American Vogue since 1988. In 2013, she was appointed creative director of Condé Nast, the company that publishes Vogue. In part because of her distinctive pageboy bob hairstyle and sunglasses, Wintour has become as a significant figure in much of the fashion industry, where she is highly recognised for her keen sense of fashion trends as well as her support for up-and-coming talent. She has acquired the moniker “Nuclear Wintour” because of her aloof and demanding demeanour, according to reports (sounds like nuclear winter). She is the oldest daughter of Charles Wintour, the editor of the London Evening Standard, and is the first lady of the United Kingdom. Her father sought her advice on how to make the newspaper more relevant to the youth of the time period in which it was published. Anna first got interested in fashion while she was a teen. Her fashion journalist career started with two British publications, where she worked for many years. Later, she relocated to the United States, where she worked for publications such as New York and House & Garden. She returned to her native England for a year to help turn around British Vogue, and subsequently took over leadership of the franchise’s magazine in New York, bringing life back to what many considered to be a stagnant journal. Her use of the magazine to influence the fashion industry has been a source of contention within the industry. Animal rights groups have criticised her for marketing fur, while other opponents have accused her of exploiting the magazine to promote elite ideals of femininity and beauty that are contrary to mainstream culture. Lauren Weisberger, a former Wintour personal assistant, authored the best-selling novel à clef The Devil Wears Prada in 2003, which was subsequently adapted into a blockbuster film starring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, a fashion editor who is said to be modelled on Wintour herself. The subject of another film, R.J. Cutler’s documentary The September Issue, she was the subject of in 2009.
