Anita Ratnam (Tamil:???????????; born May 21, 1954) is an outstanding Indian classical and contemporary dancer and choreographer whose career has spanned four decades and taken her to 15 countries. Anita Ratnam was born in 1954 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She is classically educated in Bharat Natyam, but she has also had official instruction in Kathakali, Mohiniattam, T’ai chi, and Kalarippayattu, resulting in a unique dance style that she has dubbed “Neo Bharat Natyam.” She has also performed in the United States and Europe. The Arangham Trust, which she established in 1992 in Chennai and from which she also founded the Arangham Dance Theatre, a performance group in 1993, as well as the Indian dance site www.narthaki.com, which she launched in 2000, are all named after her. Over the years, she has won many honours and accolades for her work in the performing arts, both in India and abroad, as a choreographer, scholar, and cultural activist, among other accomplishments.
