In 1998, at the age of 17, she came out as gay to her parents. She was very lost, confused and lonely and also tried to take her own life and swallowed a handful of pills. However, she survived the suicide attempt.
She was harassed and was coerced into saying she was gay while being stationed in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan.

Angelica Ross Buddhist
She practices Buddhist. On her twitter handle, she posted that:
As a Buddhist, I walk “the middle way”. I’m used to dichotomies where multiple truths can exist. I TRULY appreciate the love we’ve been receiving, but I would be remised if I didn’t also acknowledge those who offered tough love & criticism. Candy would respect that. So do I.
There are many other occurrences where she calls herself a Buddhist.

Angelica Ross Early Life|Angelica Ross Navy
Angelica Ross was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin but was raised in Racine, Wisconsin. Ross, a trans woman, has said she was perceived as feminine from a young age.
In 1998, at the age of 17, she came out as gay to her mother, an evangelical Christian. Her mother did not receive the news well as, according to Ross, “she told me I should commit suicide or she would because she couldn’t have someone like me as her child.” Ross considered ending her own life and overdosed on medication but survived.
Upon graduating high school at 17, Ross briefly attended the University of Wisconsin, Parkside before dropping out after one semester. Ross decided to join the U.S. Navy (after her parents signed a waiver so that she may join as a minor) in order to qualify for the G.I. Bill. Ross initially moved to Rochester, New York before being stationed in Yokosuka, Kanagawa.
After six months of service, she requested and received an “uncharacterized” discharge under the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy (which was then in force) due to being harassed by enlisted men who coerced her into saying she was gay.
Ross moved back home and made friends with a drag queen called Traci Ross who helped her begin her gender transition at the age of 19. Upon discovering that she was transitioning, her parents threw her out and Ross moved in with her biological father in Roanoke, Virginia. Although Ross and her parents were estranged for a time, she states that their relationship has since mended.

During the six years that she lived in Roanoke, Virginia, Ross worked as a waitress at Applebee’s so that she could earn enough money to pay rent and attend cosmetology school.
She was let go from her waitress job due to discrimination. Ross then moved to Hollywood, Florida and worked as a model and escort, then web manager, until 2003.
She started a web development and graphic design business and began taking acting classes. She later moved to Chicago to become the employment coordinator for the Trans Life Center.
Ross launched TransTech Social Enterprises in Chicago in 2014. The nonprofit creative design firm trains and contracts transgender and other workers.
Melissa Harris-Perry brought more attention to the firm in 2015, choosing Ross as her show’s first “Foot Soldier” of the year. Ross was a featured speaker at the 2015 White House LGBTQ Tech and Innovation Summit.

Angelica Ross Fired
Angelica explains how hard it was for her to sustain a job due to her gender.
“I was fired from almost every job.” When I got back to the States, I had no money, education or support, but I did have a clearer understanding of who I really was. Soon after, I started my transition. I changed my name to Angelica, got a Whitney Houston-style weave in my hair and whenever I could afford it, I’d buy black-market hormones from friends.
Discrimination is a part of any trans person’s life. Ninety percent of us report workplace harassment or mistreatment and nearly half of us have been fired from or passed over for, jobs because of our gender identity, according to a recent study.
Trans people of color, in particular, are up to four times more likely to be unemployed than the general population. I can definitely attest to this. I was fired from almost every job I’d ever had.
I managed a makeup counter at a mall, but once my co-workers found out that I was trans, they complained about me using the women’s bathroom and I was let go.
Later, I worked as a waitress, but after I objected to the harassment I was getting in the kitchen and to being called by my male birth name, I got fired from that job, too.
Destitute and desperate, I moved to Florida, where a friend hooked me up with a job at an adult website in return for cash for hormones and implants.
But after I got there, I quickly realized this wasn’t my path. I had more to offer. I ended up redesigning the entire website and eventually teaching myself code and graphic design. With my technological skills, I realized I didn’t have to sell my body.

On a daily show with Trevor Noah, Angelica Ross talked about Her Story. Angelica Ross, a member of the Transfaith community, is a multi-talented Black trans woman who self-identifies as a “Creative”, for whom creative expression informs and is informed by her devout Buddhist practice.
Hers is a long resume, spanning music, blogging, public speaking, acting, and website design amongst others. We were thrilled to see her in the spotlight twice in the month of April.
Angelica was honored with the award for Best Actress at the Transgender Film Festival is held in Kiel, Germany, April 14-17, 2016. She is one of the break-out stars in the online series “Her Story,” which also won Best Film of the Year.
On April 6, 2016, Angelica was featured on The Daily Show with Trevor Noahhighlighting Trans Tech Social Enterprises, during an episode focused on transgender issues and experience. Trans Tech Social Enterprises is an organization dedicated to training and leadership development for trans and gender non-conforming people interested in technology.
Angelica explains to Noah from the outset why those services are necessary for transgender people in particular:
There’s a lot of space where we’re just forced out; of school, we’re forced out of work; no place really is safe, especially in certain states, for trans people. So first, we wanted to create a safe space that people could come in and access the internet and computers and training, and build their skills for better employment.
Angelica also speaks to the challenges transgender people have incorporate workforces in having to prove their worth:
Sometimes, we’re even working 2, 3, 4 times as hard, just so that someone will give us an opportunity.
Towards the end of the segment, as Noah asks for her tips on how to support and educate cis people who want to be better allies, Angelica stresses self-education and closer introspection when talking with trans folks:
We in the trans community understand intention more than we understand the words…a lot of people will think they well-intentioned, but the impact will be quite different than what their intentions were.

Ross has landed a major role in American Horror Story. Less than 24 hours after a pivotal episode on the groundbreaking FX drama, Ross has been cast in a series-regular role in Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s other high-profile and long-running series on the cable network.
In the upcoming ninth season of the horror anthology, titled AHS: 1984, Ross will appear in an “unforgettable” role, according to Murphy.
Ross was one of five trans women of color to be cast in a series-regular role to make up Pose’s leading ensemble, an unprecedented number for a scripted series in the U.S. Until Tuesday’s powerful episode, she portrayed ballroom spitfire Candy Ferocity on the FX series, which was created by Murphy, Falchuk and Steven Canals. Pose, currently airing its second season, has been renewed for a third and is eligible for the 2019 Emmys for season one.
Murphy took to social media to announce the casting, while also speaking out about putting a spotlight on violence against trans women of color with Candy’s fate.
“Last night’s episode of Pose required us all to dig deep — @janetmock as a writer, myself as writer and director, but most of all our incredible leading ladies,” wrote the showrunner. “I must applaud @angelicaross for her tour de force of performance as Candy Abundance Ferocity.
It has been a gift to watch her blossom as a true star and undeniable talent. Though she will always be our Candy, and our show suffers this incredible loss, I am elated that the world will get much more Angelica.
She is joining the American Horror Story family in another unforgettable role. Congrats Angelica for making history, leaping from #PoseFX to #AHS1984. Welcome to the #AHS family!”
Ross also announced the news on her social media, calling out the notable casting. “I am ELATED to make history as the first trans actor to secure 2 series regular roles, leaping from #PoseFX to #AHS1984!” she wrote when announcing the news. “Thank you @mrrpmurphy for the gift of playing Candy & creating my newest role on American Horror Story! I’m so grateful & excited to join the @ahsfx family!!!”
Ross made her TV debut on Caitlyn Jenner’s E! reality series I Am Cait in 2015. Her acting career began in 2016 when she starred in the web series Her Story, which was about trans women living in Los Angeles.
The series was nominated for an Emmy in the outstanding short-form comedy or drama category. After making appearances on several scripted series — including Claws, Doubt and Transparent — throughout 2017, Ross eventually scored her breakout role as Candy on Pose the next year.
Her casting follows a trail blazed by Orange Is the New Black’s Emmy-nominated Laverne Cox, who made broadcast TV history as the first transgender actress to play a series-regular role as a transgender character on CBS’ Doubt in 2017.
Ross’ casting follows news that AHS leading lady Sarah Paulson will not be returning in a series-regular role. Sources confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Paulson won’t be appearing in the same capacity for AHS: 1984, which will star Emma Roberts and franchise newcomer Gus Kenworthy. It is also unclear if Evan Peters, who has appeared in every AHS cycle, will return.
The perennially tight-lipped Murphy revealed the title of the ninth cycle with a clip that invoked slasher-horror films from the 1980s.
The year 1984 welcomed a slew of horror pics to the big screen and would provide Murphy and Falchuk with a deep bench of classics to reference in the upcoming season, which is set to premiere Sept. 18 on FX. Angelica Ross And Bernie Sanders|Angelica Ross Guardian|Angelica Ross Democratic Debate
But by Sunday morning, she was ready to call it quits with the social media platform. “Going to take a break from social media for a while and let my team run my accounts,” she tweeted.
After a week on Twitter, she tweeted that she found out that Sanders was going to be visiting a black barbershop and HBCUs instead of going to the LGBTQ Forum.
In an interview with The Guardian after the forum, she called it a “huge misstep” for the senator to skip both forums and accused him of attending “photo ops” instead.
“You don’t show up for both of our LGBTQ events?” Ross said. “That’s obviously telling us all we need to know.”
“I’m going to risk being super real here for a second,” she continued. “When you’re on the campaign trail, what’s happening a lot – and what a lot of these candidates have to avoid – is being seen as looking for a photo op. To be seen in certain communities and spaces. I heard that he was not only visiting the [HBCU’s] but also visiting an old black barbershop.”
“I’m already struggling as a black trans advocate to get folks in my own black community to understand that being black and being LGBTQ are not mutually exclusive.
What I hope Bernie would learn is you don’t have to pander to just one aspect of the black community. If he would have been at the LGBTQ forum tonight, he would have seen we were talking about issues affecting people of color. I think it was a huge misstep on his part. And I’m not here for any of the excuses. I say: ‘Make it up to me. Make it up to us.’”
Her mentions on Twitter started being flooded with Sanders supporters accusing her of lying. They also accused her of “bias” for calling Sanders out and not the other frontrunners, even though the other frontrunners were all attending at least one of the forums.
She was also getting criticized by supporters of Donald Trump this weekend because of her role in the LGBTQ forum. The Advocate posted a tweet with part of her opening statement at the forum where she criticized the Trump administration for its attacks on transgender people.
Trump supporters accused her of lying and used transphobic invective to attack her.
“One of the reasons I’m here tonight is because the Trump administration… is harming transgender Americans.”@AngelicaRoss opens the #LGBTQforum with a rousing speech about why we continue to fight for equality.
All this for being a black transgender woman who publicly spoke out for LGBTQ equality. Her fans are supportive of her taking a break, but they’re also disappointed that it came to this.
Angelica Ross Pronouns
Chris Cuomo” was basically the reaction of Pose stars Indya Moore and Angelica Ross, along with with other members and advocates of the transgender community, after the CNN host made an insensitive remark about preferred pronouns during an LGBTQ-focused “Equality Town Hall” event hosted by the network.
As the Los Angeles Times reports, the incident happened Thursday as Democratic presidential hopeful and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) took to the stage.
In greeting the audience, Harris shared, “My pronouns are she, her and hers,” which was met with applause—as well as a (needless) “quip” by Cuomo:
“She, her and hers?” he repeated. “Mine too,” he said, to which Harris replied simply, “All right.”
The uncomfortable encounter lasted less than 10 seconds but sparked immediate backlash from the LGBTQ community and its allies on Twitter, who held Cuomo, known to use the pronouns he, him and his, accountable for the gaffe.
Cuomo issued an apology and declared himself an ally of the LGBTQ community, tweeting in part: “When Sen. Harris said her pronouns were she her and her’s, I said mine too. I should not have. I apologize. I am an ally of the LGBTQ community, and I am sorry because I am committed to helping us achieve equality.”
Angelica Ross Quotes
- What’s hurtful is when you have portrayals like, you know, when you have someone like Jared Leto who accepts an award for ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ after playing a trans woman, standing in a full beard and looking fully cis male: it is communicating to our audiences that underneath all of that, it’s still a man under that.
- I actually run a nonprofit that’s all about giving people opportunities to be their own heroes and do their own work.
- You always have some trans girl saying, ‘Oh, they were just being funny! They aren’t really transphobic,’ Just like you will always have some black folks defending some white person for using the ‘N’ word because they are ‘cool.’
- Visibility has an effect on those who are privileged; it brings more privilege, and on those who are marginalized, it brings more marginalization, because it also brings a spotlight onto them where they’re at, in the hood or in certain places that are less tolerable. Angelica Ross
