Angela C. Santomero is the executive producer and co-creator of the long-running Nickelodeon kids’ show Blue’s Clues, as well as the PBS kids’ programmes Super Why, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Peep and the Big Wide World, and The WotWots, and the Amazon Studios series Creative Galaxy. Santomero grew up in Harrington Park, New Jersey, and attended Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan after graduating from Harrington Park Public School in 1982. She graduated from Catholic University with a bachelor’s degree and was subsequently honoured with the Young Alumni Merit Award. She graduated from Columbia University with a master’s degree in child development and psychology, with a focus on instructional technology and media.
She was influenced by Daniel R. Anderson’s research during graduate school, where he studied the effects of television violence on children and later worked as a researcher and consultant for Blue’s Clues, and “became fascinated with the idea that if television could have a powerful negative effect on kids, it could also have a powerful positive effect on them…” She was also inspired by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood presenter Fred Rogers and Sesame Street scholars. In the early 1990s, Santomero worked as a researcher for Nickelodeon, which was seeking to develop a new preschool television programme. The “landmark” series Blue’s Clues was developed in 1994 by Santomero, director Todd Kessler, and animator Traci Page Johnson (a group Nickelodeon CEO Brown Johnson referred to as a “green creative team”).
