Angela Yvonne Davis (born January 26, 1944) is an author, academic, and political activist in the United States. She rose to prominence as a counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s as the head of the Communist Party USA, and via her participation in the Civil Rights Movement, she developed strong ties with the Black Panther Party, although never being an official member. Her passions include prisoner rights, and she is the creator of Critical Resistance, an organisation dedicated to ending the prison-industrial complex. She is a former director of the University of California, Santa Cruz’s
Feminist Studies department and a retired professor in the History of Consciousness Department. Davis was accused with conspiracy, tried, and acquitted in the 1970 armed takeover of a Marin County courthouse, which resulted in the deaths of four people. Feminism, African-American studies, critical theory, Marxism, popular music, social awareness, and the philosophy and history of punishment and prisons are among her study interests. Ronald Reagan requested in 1969 that she be banned from teaching at any institution in the state of California because of her membership in the Communist Party. During the 1980s, she ran for Vice President on the Communist Party USA platform twice.
