The former president of the Service Employees International Organization (SEIU), which has 2.2 million members and is the fastest-growing labour union in the Americas, Andrew L. “Andy” Stern (born November 22, 1950) is an American businessman and former union leader. In terms of membership, SEIU is the second biggest union in the United States and Canada, behind only the National Education Association. Stern was chosen as the successor to John Sweeney in 1996. A Senior Fellow at Columbia University is where he is presently based. According to Stern, federal legislation that helps revitalise the labour movement through universal health care, expanding union ranks through the Employee Free Choice Act, stronger regulations on businesses, profit sharing for employees, higher taxes, and efforts consistent with the improvement of the lives of workers are all worthwhile endeavours to pursue in Washington.
