Andy Breckman (born March 3, 1955) is a television and film writer from the United States, as well as a WFMU radio personality. He co-created and executive produced the Emmy Award-winning television series Monk on the USA Network with David Hoberman, and he co-hosts WFMU radio’s long-running conceptual comedy show Seven Second Delay. He’s written screenplays for a number of comedies, including Sgt. Bilko (starring Steve Martin) and Rat Race (directed by Jerry Zucker), and is often recruited as a “script doctor” to infuse humour into other screenwriters’ projects. Breckman’s greatest hit, Monk, was a murder mystery with a comedic touch, despite his beginnings as a comedy writer (for Saturday Night Live and David Letterman). Breckman informed New Jersey Monthly that he was a voracious reader of Arthur Conan Doyle’s, John D. MacDonald’s, and other “solvable” mystery writers, as well as a huge admirer of the TV show Columbo. He compares it to comic writing in certain ways. “It’s all about riddles and solving problems. “Extremely logical.” Little Monk, a spinoff series starring detective Adrian Monk as a kid, premiered on the USA Network in August 2009. Breckman was a member of the show’s writing staff. Uncle Andy Toys, a series of odd toys created by Breckman, debuted in 2014.
