Clyde was born in Walkerton, Ontario, to American parents. He was born in Indiana and spent most of his childhood in New York.
In 1985, he graduated from Bethel University with honors. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy through the University of Notre Dame’s Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program.
He served in the Navy for 28 years, including three combat deployments to Iraq and Kuwait with the Seabees.
