When they met they were both playing acoustic sets at Arkansas book stores and coffee houses and recorded two EPs, Evanescence EP and Sound Asleep EP. On October 22, 2003, Moody left the band citing “creative differences”. Ex-Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo replaced Moody in the band.

In a Q&A with Forbes Magazine on May 18, 2020, Lee mentioned that the “image and idea” of the band from the early days was “something that combined multiple dramas, from the dramatic to the rock to the classical to the score”, and that although many things have changed since the “idea that started this whole thing is still there”.
