Mitabh Kumar’s full name is Mitabh Kumar. “Amit” Singhal (born 1968/9) is a senior vice president and software engineer at Google Inc. He is also a Google Fellow and serves as the project leader for Google’s fundamental ranking algorithm, known as the Google algorithm. Amit was born in Jhansi, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee in 1989. After moving to the United States, he completed his computer science studies and graduated with an M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1991. Amit continued his studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he graduated with a Ph.D. in mathematics and statistics in 1996. Amit studied under Gerard Salton while at Cornell, who was a pioneer in the area of information retrieval, the academic subject that serves as the basis for contemporary search technology. Gerard Salton is referred to as “the father of digital search” by John Battelle in his book “The Search.” In 1990, while studying at the University of Minnesota Duluth, he became interested in the issue of search.
He joined AT&T Labs (formerly a part of Bell Labs) in 1996, where he continued his research in information retrieval, speech retrieval, and other related areas after earning his Ph.D. in 1996. When his buddy Krishna Bharat convinced him to join Google in 2000, he was thrilled. Amit is in charge of the core search quality section at Google. In addition, he and his colleagues are in charge of the Google search algorithms. It has been said that Mr. Singhal is the mastermind behind what Google calls its “ranking algorithm” — the formulae that are used to determine which Web sites are the most relevant to a user’s query. Amit had the honour of being designated a “Google Fellow” in 2001 as a result of his rewrite of the search engine. As a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2011, he was recognised for his contributions to the field.
Amit Singhal was rated one of the world’s brightest people in technology by Fortune magazine. Amit Singhal was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Science and Technology Award at the Asian Awards in 2011, which were held in Singapore. He has the following to say about the University of Minnesota Duluth: “My time at UMD was a watershed moment in my life. The fact that I studied Information Retrieval with Don Crouch, and subsequently that Don recommended that I go to Cornell to study with Gerard Salton, is the primary cause for my current level of achievement. My fascination in search was sparked by Don, and I have been following my desire ever since.”
