Allison Schmitt Biography
Allison Schmitt is an American competition swimmer who specializes in freestyle events and is an eight-time Olympic medalist.
At age nine, she began swimming, saying that she followed her older sister, Kirsten, into it. “I thought of leaving,” said Schmitt, “but she stayed one more season and enjoyed it.” She said she tried soccer, dance, basketball, volleyball, softball before settling in on the pool, even while she said she had the hockey equipment, she opted to swim instead.
From 11 to 14 years of age, Schmitt swam with the Ann Arbor Swim Club (AASC) in Ann Arbor, Michigan (which merged into Club Wolverine in 2006). In an interview during the 2012 Summer Olympics, Josh Morgan, her then-AASC coach, said there was no indication of how fast she would one day become in those years.
He said she started showing real potential later on at high school in the spring of her junior year as she went to a 2007 Junior National Team competition. Calling it “their first real breakthrough swim,” he said she went “from pretty good to very bad,” falling four to five seconds off her 200-meter freestyle short run of usually about a minute fifty-two seconds, down to around a minute forty-seven, thus bringing Schmitt into what Morgan called “elite market.”
