On the first aerial survey of the year done by the Mammel Research Institiute in South Africa, conducted between Hermanus and Infanta, we counted a total of 1,347 southern right whales, of which 661 calves.
This is triple the number of whales from last year and the ALL TIME RECORD of southern right whales along the South African shore.
These huge numbers can be explained by the delayed calving of females in previous years, due to which we saw very few whales in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
