Alice Coote (born 10 May 1968) is a lyric mezzo-soprano from the United Kingdom. Alice Coote was born in Frodsham, Cheshire, England, the daughter of painter Mark Coote. She studied art at the University of Manchester. She received her training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (though she did not complete her studies there), the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (where she met Janet Baker and Brigitte Fassbaender), and the National Opera Studio in London between 1995 and 1996, before moving to New York. From 2001 to 2003, Coote was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, a position he held for three years. The operatic repertoire (especially ‘trouser’ parts) and recital repertoire are both favourites of hers, the latter of which she performs often with pianist Julius Drake. As a Handel interpreter (“his music could keep you going for an entire lifetime”), she has also performed modern works such as Dominick Argento’s From the Diary of Virginia Woolf, a partially atonal work originally performed by Janet Baker, who had a significant impact on Coote’s career. She was the subject of a song cycle by Judith Weir, entitled The Voice of Desire, which was debuted at a BBC Chamber Prom. The English opera company Opera North, the English National Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York (Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel), the San Francisco Opera (Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina) in 2002 and 2008 (Idamante in Mozart’s Idomeneo) have all welcomed Alice Coote as a guest artist in the past. In 2009, she appeared at the Bavarian State Opera as Maffio Orsini in Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, in which she performed the title role. She also performed in Cendrillon at the Royal Opera House in 2011, when she played Prince Charming. “Giulio Cesare,” a performance of Handel’s “Giulio Cesare” at the Metropolitan Opera, featured her as Sextus in 2013.Recordings:CD:Winterreise (2013, Wigmore Hall Live) The Influence of Love (2012, Hyperion) Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius was premiered by the Hallé Concerts Society in 2008.
