In June 2016, WWE signed Tom Budgen to a deal. On January 7, 2017, he made his WWE debut under the ring name Aleister Black. Black made his ring debut on April 11 at NXT TakeOver: Orlando Championship, defeating Andrade Almas. Then, at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III, he demonstrated victory once more by defeating Itami. Velveteen Dream harassed him in the same session, which contributed to the match between NXT TakeOver: WarGames. In this match as well, Black defeated Dreams.
