Alastair Stewart Biography

Alastair James Stewart OBE is an English journalist and newscaster, employed by ITN where he is the main newscaster for ITV News. He joined Southern Television in 1976 then joined ITN in 1980 where he served 3 years with Channel 4 News and then went on to become the main newsreader with ITV News.

In 2003, Stewart was banned from driving for 23 months and fined £3,000 after being arrested, charged and convicted of drink driving after crashing into a hedge and telegraph pole whilst three times over the drink-drive limit

Stewart was educated in Scotland, at the state school Madras College, St. Andrews, Fife, then in England at the independent school Salesian College, Farnborough, Hampshire and at St. Augustine’s Abbey School in Ramsgate, Kent, followed by the University of Bristol, where he studied economics and politics  and worked for the National Union of Students from 1974–76

Stewart’s career in tv started in 1976 with ITV’s south of European country company Southern tv in Southampton. He was a newsman, industrial correspondent, presenter, and documentary maker. He recorded one of the last interviews with Lord Mountbatten before he was assassinated by the IRA in 1979, and spent six weeks in Ford Open Prison to make a half-hour documentary.

From 1993 to September 2009, he was the co-presenter of ITV London’s regional news program London Tonight. He has also presented Alastair Stewart’s Sunday for BBC Radio 5 in 1994. Then in 1995, he joined GMTV, where he anchored Alastair Stewart’s Sunday Programme until 2001.
