Alan Tudyk plays Mr. Nobody in the animated series Doom Patrol. He has been one of Hollywood’s most successful actors. An illustrious career spanning decade-long accolades and award-winning performances has repeatedly shown his ability to play roles ranging from comedy horrors to superhero series.
With a wide range of works under his belt, Alan Tudyk has made name for himself as an Actor and even more as a voice actor as he is one of the leading names that can deliver a unique and delightful impression.
With over a hundred movies to his name and even more voice acting ranging from cartoons, and video games to movies and even theatre, Alan Tudyk has a resume of constant hits.
Looking back at the kind of career Alan Tudyk has made for himself, picking out his best roles is not easy. However, we have created a compilation of what we believe are the 10 best roles portrayed by Alan Tudyk.
1.Turbo (King Candy), “Wreck-it Ralph”
Alan Tudyk plays the role of Turbo “King Candy” in this 2012 Disney animated series.
The personality and grittiness of the main antagonist are executed in a perfect manner. King Candy who is later on revealed to be Turbo is a self-proclaimed ruler of a kart-racing video game set but in reality, is all talk and no actions. Accidentally unleashed by Ralph on his quest to prove his worth as a hero. King Candy becomes a threat to the entire arcade.
Tudyk had done his homework on this role as King Candy was inspired by the likeness of Ed Wynn. Tudyk made sure that Ed Wynn’s inspiration was less of a blatant copy and mixed it with his own style to create a unique villain the arcade feared.
This role won him an Annie Award for “Best Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production” and has made King Candy, one of the most loved antagonists in an animated series.
Various video game adaptations of the character alongside his supporting role as a new character in the sequel “Ralph Breaks the Internet” further prove the importance of Alan Tudyk as he stands out in one of the most star-studded lineups imaginable.
2.Hoban Washburne, “Firefly/Serenity”
Tudyk’s character Hoban “Wash” Washburne, was the only character in the series with some style. A short-lived series followed by a cult classic spinoff. The pilot of a drug smuggling ship five hundred years into the future, Wash has the responsibility of keeping the whole crew in check as various factions including authority are out to capture them and ruin their adventure.
Hoban grew up in a broken home with a dream of becoming a pilot and spent every day working on this dream. Now married to Zoe Alleyne Washburne (Gina Torres) and living with his crew piloting a ship captained by Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), Mr.Wash has a lot to take care of.
Something Alan Tudyk thrives in, this character demanded a playful and calm Tudyk with a distinctive sense of humor which he delivered in the best way possible. Alex Tudyk appears as Hoban Washburne on two occasions, the 2002 Fox television series “Firefly” and its 2005 film continuation “Serenity”.
The show received a relatively mild reception from the audience at the time of release but slowly went on to develop a cult fanbase which opened big doors of opportunities for Alex Tudyk as after this he went on to deliver blockbuster hits and appear on various shows that are keeping him relevant to this date.
3.The Joker and Clayface, “Harley Quinn”
The chemistry between the Joker (Alan Tudyk) and Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) is as perfect as it is in the comics making this animated series one of the best modern-day adaptations of Harley Quinn.
It is always a debate on who should be the Joker as this crazy maniac from Gotham is the most talked about character in DC Comics. We can create a whole other list debating on the best Joker portrayals of all time, whether we are talking about animated series or real-life adaptations.
This is why, it was no debate on Tudyk being given an opportunity to be everyone’s favorite trash-talking, chaotic villain. Tudyk seemed to have no problem wearing his mask and when he did, he blew all expectations out of the roof as The Joker is probably the best villain in the series excluding the brilliant dialogue choices of Bane (James Adomian).
Alongside Joker and the mighty Clayface, he also voices characters like Ocean Master, Condiment King, Calendar Man, Doctor Trap, and even more small-time characters in the series.
4.Dangerboat, “The Tick”
Only Alan Tudyk holds the power to make the personality of a watercraft stand out. A very hard job to execute as most of the voice acting portraying an object always results in bland delivery, terrible choice of dialogues, and an overall boring and not-so-fun feeling to the character.
Taking this as a challenge, Tudyk makes Dangerboat feels like a walking, breathing character with awkward jokes, a personality of its own, and heartfelt conversation complete with plenty of gags and life to this character.
By acting as the voice of artificial intelligence, which has feelings for Arthur (Griffin Newman) and claims to have the brain of an old Flag Five member. Isn’t it crazy? Even though Dangerboat does not have that many of screen time in the series.
Alan Tudyk makes the most of what he is given with his extraordinary delivery style and humor. Tudyk fans might not get satisfaction out of his appearances in the series, but as always it is a sure go that you will get a lot of laughs.
5.Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, “Resident Alien”
There are quite a few actors in Hollywood who can pull off silly and lumbersome humor like Alan Tudyk. And through the two seasons, we have seen the comedic magic that he brings to the table.
Harry Vanderspeigle who has an alien name that is too hard for us humans to pronounce finds himself taking the role of a doctor whose house he crash-lands on and loses a significant portion of his spaceship which he is trying to find in order to execute his mission to destroy all humans.
After this, he learns the life of Earth and languages by consuming a lot of American Television and slowly finds himself having a change of mind as he has grown a liking to these creatures and finds himself growing attached to a couple of people Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko) and Sam Hodges (Jan Bos) with whom he works and spends the most time with.
Tudyk perfectly plays the role of an alien trying to learn new things in life, completely unaware of the things that are bound to happen and equally excited about the new world he is put in.
6.Doc Potter, “3:10 To Yuma”
Sharing the big screen with Christian Bale and Russel Crowe, 3:10 to Yuma is a rollercoaster of emotions.
As the boys take on a western role of war crimes happening in plain sight. Arizona in the 1800s is terrorized by Outlaws and their main man Ben Wade (Russel Crow) is captured and needs to be brought on trial volunteered by Dan Evans (Christian Bale) to be escorted to the train that will take him to the trial.
This is where Doc Potter comes in with his hilarious one-liner that adds an important comedic relief to the gritty environment of the 1800s west. Potter is a former vet who now acts as a wound treater, the kind of character that was made for Alan Tudyk and as always, you can expect him to be the life of conversation in these situations through his outright funny style.
It might not have crossed your mind that Doc Potter was Alan Tudyk. But, I’m pretty sure you remember the character and his acting as you read this.
7.Heihei, “Moana”
Let’s get straight to the point; Heihei the rooster is a character of a chicken. Yes, a chicken that does not utter a word throughout the duration of the movie. Heihei is nothing but chicken noises.
But, that’s what makes this role iconic. Heihei is one of the major characters of the movie, when Moana (Auli’i Carvalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) undertake the journey that takes them all over the island, she makes sure that she brings her bumbling, good-for-nothing clumsy rooster with her.
Disney could easily find stock sounds for a chicken that they could have used but their decision to trust Alan Tudyk on this was one of the wisest decisions they have ever made. Marking his return to Walt Disney, Heihei was not what we expected from Tudyk, but what we all enjoyed.
Furthermore, he also has the role of a small villager in the movie that kind points out that the chicken is useless. With refreshing characters like this, it’s safe to say that Alan Tudyk has cemented his name as one of the best entertainers in the industry.
8.K-2SO, “Rogue One : A Star Wars Story”
Tudyk as K-2SO an imperial security droid who is also a co-pilot of Cassian Andor delivers one of the most iconic roles in what is believed to be one of the best Star Wars movies in the modern era. And what’s even more special is the fact that he doesn’t appear onscreen even once.
Performing as motion capture for what eventually became K-2SO and giving him a warm and subtle personality. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a story of a former scientist Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) whose peaceful existence comes to an end with an evil force taking him away from his family.
Years later, he builds the most powerful weapon of destruction. Knowing this Jyn (Felicity Jones) joins forces with a spy to fight against evil. We don’t want to spoil things for you, so we are going to stop talking about the events of the movie. Furthermore, Tudyk defined his experience as K-2SO challenging as he had to struggle walking and running in the big costume he had to wear throughout the shoot.
However, he did an amazing job expressing emotions through his bodily movements as the droid doesn’t seem to have any face animations. Tudyk considers this character as one of his most memorable and enjoyable to date, and we certainly hope to see more of Alan Tudyk as K-2SO in future franchises.
9.Sonny, “I, Robot”
For someone who has been a part of so many iconic android characters. It is remarkable how Alan Tudyk has been able to make everyone stand out.
Taking the role of Sonny, an advanced and faster version of the N Series who is the tritagonist of the movie alongside the main character Will Smith, Tudyk managed to capture the raw emotions of a robot built to be their eventual savior.
In a world where Robots take over humans occupying their public service positions. Detective Del Spooner portrayed by Will Smith investigates the death of the founding member of Robotics Dr. Alfred J. Laning (James Cromwell) just to find out that maybe there is more from the robots as they might be secretly planning to enslave the human race.
A brilliant display of a droid with emotions and vulnerability who later on turns out to be the major key to the murder conspiracy, The differences in the style between Sonny and K-2SO even though they both are droids really showcase the talent of Alan Tudyk as voice actor.
10.Wray Nerely, “Con Man”
Out of all the memorable and outstanding works he has produced as an entertainer. The one that stands out the most is the comedy he produced and is based on his real-life celebrity life called “Con Man”.
Here he takes the role of a struggling actor Wray Nerely who despite landing a cult favorite show called Spectrum where he is a captain of a spaceship hasn’t really been able to make ends meet through acting while his co-star (Jack Moore) who was his co-pilot in the series becomes an A-list celebrity and lives the life that he always dreamt of.
Bringing in various sort of problems and jealousy that comes with unemployment and watching someone else you have worked with establish their name. Being the one who wrote, produced, and created this masterpiece all on his own, Con Man cements Alan Tudyk as a creative genius and makes him one of the best entertainers to graze the industry.
His love and enthusiasm for creating pure entertainment are brilliantly showcased in this gem and is definitely one of his best roles in Hollywood. This critically acclaimed piece of art is a 2 season marathon you will be sure to binge-watch.
It’s a shame how we didn’t get more of Con Man but sometimes, less is more.
