Alan Hurst (Politician) Wife: Who Is Hilary Burch?

The Labour Party politician and British lawyer Alan Arthur Hurst was born on September 2, 1945. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Braintree, Essex, from 1997 to 2005.

In the 1997 general election, he made headlines by defeating Tony Newton, who had held the seat in Braintree since the election of 1955, with a majority of 1,494. His winning the seat at the 2001 general election with a majority of 358, making it Labour’s second-most marginal victory at that election and the sixth-most overall, was almost as unexpected (though not in hindsight, given that the Tories made virtually no headway nationally in that year). He was defeated by Conservative Party candidate Brooks Newmark in the general election of 2005.

In an effort to have the bill’s increased funding for universities without higher fees (possibly by raising the basic or higher rate of income tax or enacting a graduate tax), the government supported an amendment to the top-up fees bill (Higher Education Act 2004) that would have removed such fees from the bill while maintaining other aspects of it. The government claimed that greater funding (almost, though not quite, universally accepted to be necessary)

In order to hold funds hostage and assure the bill’s passage, the government (which had slashed it in its first term and had previously hiked National Insurance contributions once, despite the fact that this action was quite popular), did so.
