Alan Hurst (Politician) Cause Of Death

Alan Arthur Hurst was a British solicitor and Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Braintree in Essex from 1997 to 2005.

Before becoming an MP, he served as deputy leader of the Southend-on-Sea Council, which he joined in 1968. While an MP, he continued to work part-time as a solicitor. He was elected to Essex County Council for the Orsett & Stifford division in 1993.

He made headlines in the 1997 general election by defeating Tony Newton, who had held the Conservative majority in Braintree since the election of 1955, by 1,494 votes.

His retention of the seat at the 2001 general election, though this time with a majority of 358, making it Labour’s second-most marginal victory at that election and the sixth-most overall, was almost as surprising (though not in hindsight, given that the Tories made virtually no progress nationally in 2001). In the general election of 2005, Conservative Party candidate Brooks Newmark defeated him for the seat.
