Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Braintree in Essex from 1997 to 2005, Alan Arthur Hurst was a British lawyer and Labour Party official who died in February 2023. In the 1997 general election, he made headlines by defeating Tony Newton, who had held the seat in Braintree since the election of 1955, with a majority of 1,494.
His winning the seat at the 2001 general election with a majority of 358, making it Labour’s second-most marginal victory at that election and the sixth-most overall, was almost as unexpected (though not in hindsight, given that the Tories made virtually no headway nationally in that year). He was defeated by Conservative Party candidate Brooks Newmark in the general election of 2005.
