Al Joyner (born January 19, 1960) is an American athlete who competes in track and field. In the triple jump, he won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. While he is an Olympic gold medalist in his own right, he is probably more known as the spouse of the “fastest woman on the planet,” Florence Griffith Joyner, and as the brother of Jackie Joyner Kersee, the “best female athlete” in the history of the sport. Al Joyner was a standout athlete at Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, Illinois, before going on to study at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. As a member of their track and field team throughout his college career, Al had earned three NCAA All-American indoor titles, three NCAA All-American and outdoor titles, four Southland Conference titles, and a runner-up finish in the triple jump at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. By the time he graduated, Al had also earned a spot on the All-American team in the triple jump. When the 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles, Al went there to participate with the United States Olympic track and field squad. With a triple jump of 56’7.5″, he became the first African-American to win a gold medal in the triple jump in more than eight decades. 

pics. Al married Florence Griffith, better known as Flo Jo, on October 10, 1987, in a ceremony that was broadcast across the world. Both of them felt an immediate connection when they first met in 1980 at the Olympic trials registration. Al subsequently began coaching Florence, who went on to win three gold medals and one silver in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay events. Florence died after an epileptic episode in 1998, much to the surprise of Al and the couple’s daughter Mary Ruth. Florence was 38 years old at the time. Following his wife’s untimely death, Al started touring to promote her recently released book, “Running for Dummies,” as well as to kick-start the Florence Griffith Joyner charity/scholarship fund, which was established in her honour. Aside from that, he took over as director of the Flo Jo Community Empowerment Foundation, a non-profit committed to making dreams come true for young people all over the globe.
