Akmal Saleh Career

In 1990, Saleh debuted stand-up comedy. Under the alias “Peter Saleh,” he performed for a time—”so people would think I was white, “he says. Peter’ seemed like a common name.’ Akmal’ is such an awkward name, a very difficult name to remember.”[7] In 1992 he co-wrote and starred in the show All Aussies are Boofta as well as the best comedians alongside Anthony Mir and Gary Eck, who enjoyed successful runs in various venues in Sydney.

He also performs stand-up solo shows and has toured numerous comedy festivals in Australia as well as around the world. Akmal usually jokes about his own Middle Eastern ethnicity and negative stereotypes. He says he doesn’t want to be known as an “ethnic comic,” however, and he likes to be able to talk about “broad range of things.” He says he’s the most comfortable stand-up performer: “It’s the best thing I do. I’m not a radio guy. I’m a radio comedian.”

In January 2007, Saleh appeared on Australian radio, filling three weeks on Nova for Merrick and Rosso before receiving his own drive-time show. He was initially contracted to co-host the show along with actor Matthew Newton, but Newton was dropped unexpectedly after news emerged that he faced charges of assault involving a former girlfriend and instead made a solo debut with Saleh.

He, in 2013, became the ambassador for the Top Blokes Foundation.
