Agnes Nixon (born Agnes Eckhardt; December 10, 1927) is an American writer and producer who was born in New York City in 1927. She is most recognised for being the creator of popular daytime television shows such as One Life to Live, All My Children, and Loving, among others. She had an important part in the creation of these series, serving as executive producer or consultant producer for all three shows for a long period of time: from 1968 to 1973 on One Life to Live, from 1970 to 1981 on All My Children, and from 1993 to 1995 on Loving, among other roles.
Nixon continued to write for All My Children with Wisner Washam until 1983, and again with him and Lorraine Broderick from 1988 to 1992, and has remained involved with the show as a consultant in recurrent roles to this day. Nixon is married to Wisner Washam and they have two children. In fact, Nixon and her protégés Washam and Broderick wrote almost every episode of All My Children from 1970 to 1989, while Nixon’s involvement in One Life to Live was more restricted when she relinquished control of the show’s day-to-day operations in 1975.
Her lengthy career and the large number of popular programmes she has produced or been a part of have earned her the title “Queen” of the modern day soap opera, which she has held since the 1970s. Her inventions and writing have had the greatest impact on current audiences, second only to her mentor Irna Phillips in terms of influence on contemporary audiences.
