About Angourie Rice: Australian Star Who Conquered Hollywood

Who is Angourie Rice?

Angourie Rice is an Australian actress who gained recognition for her breakout role as the lead female character in the 2016 film “The Nice Guys”. Since then, she’s appeared in several other popular films and TV shows, including “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Black Mirror”.

Angourie Rice Wiki: Age, Childhood, and Education

Angourie Rice was born on 1 January 2001 in Sydney, New South Wales Australia, the daughter of film director Jeremy Rice and actress Kate Rice. She has a younger sister Kalliope, who is a gymnast.

Growing up, she lived in Perth and Munich and ultimately matriculated from Princes Hill Secondary College, a co-educational state secondary school in Carlton North, which is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Career Beginnings

Angourie started her career in the late 2000s with the role of Edith in the short film “Hidden Clouds” (2009). Two years later, she made another short film appearance, this time in the titular role of Mercy in the short family drama, co-starring Emma Chelsey, Philippe Klaus, and Alex Williams.

In 2013, she made her film debut in “These Final Hours”, a post-apocalyptic thriller set in Perth, Western Australia, playing the character of Rose, a young girl who is taken in by the film’s protagonist, James, played by Nathan Phillips. The film follows James as he tries to make his way to a party before the world ends, encountering various characters and obstacles along the way. Rice’s performance in the film was praised by critics, with some calling her a standout among the cast.

The same year she voiced the character of Jade, a female Pachyrhinosaurus and love interest of Patchi, who is voiced by Justin Long in the 3D family adventure “Walking with Dinosaurs”. The film uses a combination of live-action and computer-generated imagery to bring the prehistoric world to life. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success, grossing over $126 million worldwide.

Rise to Prominence

After a few minor roles in Australian TV series, which included “The Doctor Blake Mysteries” and “Maki: Island of Secrets” (2015), Angourie Rice’s breakout role came in 2016, when she appeared in the film “Nowhere Boys: The Book of Shadows”.

Rice auditioned for the role of Tegan, and was thrilled to join the cast of the film based on a television series she was already a fan of. In the film, Rice plays Tegan, a new student at a boys’ high school who becomes involved in the boys’ magical adventures.

Alongside Rice, the film starred a talented young cast of Australian actors, including Dougie Baldwin, Joel Lok, and Rahart Adams, directed by David Caesar and written by Tony Ayres, who also created the original “Nowhere Boys” television series. It’s a fantasy adventure film that follows four teenage boys as they discover a mysterious book of spells that leads them on a dangerous and thrilling journey.

Angourie Rice also appeared in several other notable projects around the same time. In 2016, Rice played the character of Holly March in the crime-comedy film “The Nice Guys”, directed by Shane Black and starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

The following year, Rice appeared in the critically acclaimed Australian drama “Jasper Jones”, playing the character of Eliza Wishart. Based on the novel of the same name by Craig Silvey, the film tells the story of a young boy who becomes embroiled in a small town’s dark secrets. Rice’s performance as Eliza was praised by critics.

Later in 2017, Rice appeared in the period drama “The Beguiled”, directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, and Kirsten Dunst. In the film, Rice played the character of Jane, a student at a girls’ school during the American Civil War, who becomes involved in a dangerous love triangle. “The Beguiled” was a critical success, with many praising its performances and direction, and Rice’s role as Jane was noted as another strong addition to her growing list of impressive performances.

‘Spider-Man’ and Continued Success

Angourie Rice’s career continued to flourish with several high-profile roles in the following years. In 2017, she was cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as Betty Brant, a student at Peter Parker’s high school. Rice auditioned for the role and was excited to join the cast of the popular superhero franchise.

In 2018, Rice appeared in the romantic drama “Every Day”, based on the novel of the same name by David Levithan. She played the lead role of Rhiannon, a teenage girl who falls in love with a spirit named “A”, who inhabits a different body every day.

The same year, Rice starred in the Australian comedy-drama “Ladies in Black” as Lisa, a young woman who works at a department store in 1950s Sydney. Directed by Bruce Beresford, the film was adapted from a novel by Madeleine St. John, and received positive reviews for its performances, direction, and themes of female empowerment.

Angourie next reprised her role as Betty Brant in the 2019 sequel to “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, in which Betty and her boyfriend Ned Leeds accompany Peter Parker on a school trip to Europe, where they become involved in the superhero’s latest battle against the villainous Mysterio.

In addition to her film roles, Angourie Rice has found success on television. In 2019, she appeared in an episode of the acclaimed anthology series “Black Mirror” entitled “Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too”, playing Rachel Goggins, a teenage girl who becomes obsessed with a pop star’s artificially intelligent doll.

In 2021, Rice starred in the HBO miniseries “Mare of Easttown” as Siobhan Sheehan, the daughter of Kate Winslet’s character, Mare.

She is set to star in the highly-anticipated miniseries “The Last Thing He Told Me”, in which Rice will play the role of Bailey, a teenager who is caught in the middle of a mysterious disappearance.
