A.J. Giardina Interview

AJ Giardina’s co-workers talk about AJ the practical joker

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – We’ve shown you, AJ Giardina, as he alters ego “Tony Baloney,” but you might not know his other alter ego – AJ the practical joker.

“He’s actually on my wedding video saying, ‘Meggan, Dave Vincent [former WLOX news director] called and we need you to come into work at 3 am tomorrow morning.’ So that was an introduction for me to his pranks,” WLOX Morning Anchor Meggan Gray remembered. “Me, being brand new at the time, though he was serious.”

New WLOX producers and new employees for that matter seemed to be inviting targets for AJ’s tomfoolery.

“I feel for them,” Gray added. “He would maybe wait a few weeks until they’d been here, then he’d call after a show and either pretend to be a disgruntled viewer, or a boss man saying that you needed to come to his office right away.”

Making up scenarios about crazed fans was also up AJ’s alley. There was the time that AJ worked with former WLOX anchor Gurvir Dhindsa on a prank to get into the head of Renee Johnson, who at the time worked on the studio crew.

“The story was that I had a stalker, and she wanted to come to hang out with me at work,” said Johnson, WLOX’s Digital Content Director. “I was trying to be polite, but it was kind of scary at the same time. That was AJ, he was always trying to figure out what would be the perfect practical joke.”

But one time, the joke may have been on him. It happened late one night after a 10 p.m. newscast.

“I would stay after the 10, I used to produce the 10 at that time, and it was me, AJ, and Mike Reader,” Johnson added. “AJ left, then he came back in, and he really did look like he was scared. Was he joking or not? He really thought he saw a ghost in the parking lot.”

WLOX Morning Anchor Rhonda Weidner also remembers the ghost story.

“I remember that day when AJ came in talking about the woman in the woods,” Weidner said. “Will we ever find out the truth?”
