A 12-year-old Nigerian student has developed an app to help lost children return home

In a country struggling for its own share economic setbacks, some bright lights persist. Tomisin Ogunnubi is one of the brightest personalities who suggested a solution to a problem that caught her eye.

A number of thought leaders have spoken of the benefits a country can reap when girls engage in technology and you need look no further than this 12-year-old girl to back up those claims.

Nigerian student Tomisin Ogunnubi finished developing her Android mobile tracking app My Locator. The motive for their development of the app was the need to help lost children find their way home.

Tomisin worked under the supervision of Appan Information and Communications Technology partnership between her school, Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls and the New Horizons Computer Learning Center. With them, she was able to gain the skills and knowledge she needed to create the app she always wanted.

How does Tomisin Ogunnubi’s My Locator app work?

My locator app is divided into three different sections: current location, alarm button and last saved location.

With the Current Location setting in the app, the child can know exactly where they are and what streets are surrounding them. With the “Save location” button, the children can save their current location. If the kid still isn’t able to find their way around, the app that allows the kids to save a place like their house or school will guide them on how to get to that saved place from anywhere.

Amazingly, the My Locator app’s alert button is linked to the Lagos State Emergency Service number (767). When this button is pressed, the emergency number is called and a message is sent with the child’s current location for help. The app is compatible with all Android phones. This is another convenience feature that stands out. Several thousand people including mothers have already downloaded this app and also left their reviews. As you would expect, the app has a good rating on the Google Play Store as it has four to five stars ratings from users.

If you are in Lagos and need total peace of mind, if your children are not with you, you can download the Ogunnubi app here for free on any Android phone. After installation you can use all functions.

Why you should download this for your child

This app is a win-win situation that all kids need to stay protected. The app works with locations. So if a child happens to stray from a specific location, it will show up on the Google map immediately. With these updates in seconds, they know where they are and how to get back to where they are supposed to be (saved location). Automatically, mothers and fathers do not have to worry much about the safety of their children.

There are some other apps that you can use to track your kids to make sure they are safe. These include Securefone, Footprints, Life360, etc. You can also download these apps from Google Play Store.

However, please note that these apps are not monitoring apps for teens or kids that mothers can use to track cell phone usage of their kid.

If you need to monitor what your kids are doing, apps like MobSafety Ranger Browser can help you with that if you don’t want your kid handling the phone. Famigo is another great app that you can use to childproof your kids’ devices so that they can only view parent-approved or kid-friendly apps.

There is also SMS tracker that gets a third party (that can be a mom or dad) notified of all incoming and outgoing call logs. The app also alerts the third party to the incoming and outgoing messages and photos. Other apps that work equally well are Video Monsters, Mobiflocks and Dinnertime, which allow mothers to lock and unlock their child’s phone from their device without having physical contact with their cell phones. This helps ensure children are using phones when actually required to do so.
