1. She is Chinese-American

Kelsey Chow is of mixed ethnicity. She was born on September 9, 1991, in Columbia, South Carolina, the United States. Kelsey was born to a Chinese father Jim Chow, and an American mother, Jean Chow. She is also part Cherokee on her mother’s side. Kelsey has two younger siblings – a brother and a sister.

Unlike some stars who may be shying away from it, Miss Chow loves and fully embraces her mixed ethnicity. According to her, she enjoys having the ability to play a variety of ethnicity. She also said that being ethnically ambiguous allows her to be whoever she wants to be.

To show how committed she is to her ethnic backgrounds, Kelsey Chow once revealed that she is taking classes in Mandarin because she wants to be able to read and speak the Chinese language more fluently. Moreover, despite being born and raised in the United States, Kelsey didn’t forget her Chinese nativity. She made out time in 2016 and visited her relatives in China. In addition, the One Tree Hill star is also taking online tutorials on the Cherokee language.

2. Her acting career metamorphosed from dancing

It was actually dance that ushered Kelsey Chow into acting. The actress studied dance at a very young age and fell in love with performing. According to Kelsey Chow, it was dance and theater that afforded her the opportunity to discover her passion for acting and for telling stories.

While a student at Hammond High School, Kelsey was a member of the famous Hammond Select Ensemble; she performed with the group in Italy and other places. From acting in school plays, Kelsey joined community theater and from there, she got to where she is today.

3. Kelsey Chow’s breakthrough

As earlier mentioned, Kelsey first entered acting through Community Theater. At the age of eleven, she made her acting debut in a production of Ragtime by the Community Theater. She later had her breakout television role when she was cast in the American television drama series One Tree Hill at the age of 13. Chow played a recurring role as Gigi Silveri on the American television series from 2005 to 2009.

Kelsey Chow’s big-screen breakout was, however, her role in Wind River. Other notable films and television series she has starred in include: The Suite Life of Zack & Cody(2008), My Sweet Misery (2009), Disney Channel original film Den Brother (2010), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Pair of Kings (2010-2013), and spoof TV trailer Chicago Sanitation (2015), among others.

The latest of her role is in the 2018 Kevin Costner-led television series, Yellowstone.

4. She now goes by Kelsey Asbille

Kelsey Chow’s fans may be wondering why the media now address her as Kelsey Asbille. In 2017, the Wind River star dropped her Chinese surname “Chow” in favor of her native American name “Asbille” for some reasons related to her acting career.

Kelsey was cast as a native American woman in both Wind River and Yellowstone. This generated some controversy in the industry, with many complaining that the role should have gone to one of the real native American actors. She, therefore, changed her surname.

5. Her life ambition is beyond acting – guess what?

Despite being very passionate about acting; in fact, she once hinted that her sister who is 8 years younger may finish university education before her owing to the greater time she is allotting to acting; Kelsey Chow has an even deeper and stronger ambition.

According to the fast-rising actress, she wants to study public/global health. She said her 94-year-old grandmother who worked with the World Health Organization in North Africa to eradicate tuberculosis remains her inspiration when it comes to her interest in a health-related career.

Meanwhile, Kelsey is currently studying indigenous people’s rights at Columbia University, New York City.
