Biography of Huey Lewis
Harmonica Huey, singer and composer Lewis was born in New York on July 5, 1950. The American is the son of an American of Irish descent and a Polish woman. Although he was born in New York, Huey was raised in a small town in Marin County, California. He began his education at Strawberry Point Primary School, before moving on to Edna Maguire Secondary School. He completed his high school education at Lawrenceville School.
When Huey Lewis was 13, he suffered the disappointment of his parents’ divorce. Nonetheless, he didn’t let emotions derail his life, earning perfect grades in high school and eventually going to Cornell University in New York.
Before ending up at Cornell, however, Lewis had fallen in love with the harmonica. After high school he learned the harmonica and embarked on a backpack full of adventures across Europe. As he improved on the harmonica, he gave his first concert in Madrid and used the proceeds to get a plane ticket to America after an adventurous trip. He immediately returned to Cornell after meeting Lance and Larry Hoppen in the engineering program. Lewis’ interest in college waned over time, and he eventually dropped out as a junior to pursue music.
Her fairy tale return to music and gigs didn’t happen after college, after moving to the San Francisco Bay Area. To support himself, he held jobs in landscaping, carpentry, weddings and event planning. Lewis moved to San Francisco in 1969 and in 1971 joined a band, Clover. He performed with the band for 5 years, using the stage name Hughie Louis. He didn’t enjoy much success in his first five years with Clover.
The band, which played in the Bay Area during its first five years with Lewis, moved to Los Angeles in 1976 and found their way to a club. Observed and impressed, Nick Lowe, a music producer, convinced the band to move to Britain. While the move helped Clover produce two albums, they flopped, with the UK music scene now heading towards punk rock, away from the pub rock that Clover was famous for. The band soon disbanded and Lewis, this time under the stage name Bluesy Huey Lewis played harmonica on Live and Dangerous, Thin Lizzy’s 1978 album.
The other members of Clover created a group called Huey Lewis and the American Express. The group obtains some concerts and releases its first album, Picture This, which gains a great success. The band’s third album, Sports for which it is iconic, was released in 1983. It is considered one of the best-selling pop albums of all time. The band released the album as Huey Lewis and The News.
Huey is the primary songwriter for most of the group’s songs, and the group has released nine albums since its debut. The group is also known for its contribution to the soundtrack of the classic film Back to the Future.
