Kenya is one of the East African nations with a fast growing economy. The country’s colorful flag showcases its diverse agriculture and history of independence. Just like other nations, Kenyans value their flag and this is why it has always been considered a symbol uniting the 42 indigenous tribes of Kenya. Despite political instability and tough economic times, the country has held its place at the top as one of Africa’s top travel destinations. The flag of Kenya, popularly known as “Bendera” in the local Swahili language, was first adopted on December 12, 1963.
The structure of the Kenya flag
Kenya flag features 3 parallel horizontal bands that are all equal in size and length. The black band is at the top, followed by the red color and the green color at the bottom. In addition, the red ribbon is sandwiched in white. Maasai shield covered crossed spears in flag. The shield is imposed in the middle. Ideally, the flag of Kenya shares many similarities with the Kenya African National Union (KANU) flag. It consists of the colors black, red, green and white. The following is a detailed breakdown of the above colors and their respective meanings:
• Black: This color symbolizes the black people who are the majority of Kenyan citizens. It was included due to the dominance of the British colonialists in the country’s struggle for independence.
• Red: The red color in the Kenyan flag is a symbol of the blood shed during the fight for freedom. There was much bloodshed and death as the Mau Mau Uprising drew British soldiers into the war that eventually led to the country’s independence from colonial rule.
• Green: The inclusion of green in the flag comes as a symbol of the green country of Kenya. Kenya is a country whose economy is largely based on agriculture. This color clearly shows the fertile land of the country, which is the pillar of its agriculture.
• The Massia Shield and Two Spears: The traditional Masai shield and two spears were adopted after Kenya gained independence. The shield and the two spears symbolize that all Kenyans are always ready to defend the independence they fought so hard for.
