The 2017 Oscar mix-up will likely go down as one of the most memorable moments in Oscars history, and for the wrong and memorable reasons.
Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway announced the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture as “La la land,” only for the two-second winners to correct the error a moment later midway through their commemorative speech and share that “Moonlight” is indeed the was the winner in the category. The glitch was by far the most confusing moment of the night, as thousands of viewers wondered what exactly happened onstage at the Hollywood Dolby Theater.
The 2017 Oscar mix-up is probably worthy of a Most Epic Mix-up Oscar of its own, but each is such a good sport. Of course, as most people involved in such epic mix-ups have shown us, there’s little other way to deal with winning and then not winning an award.
Awards ceremonies certainly aren’t easy to plan for, and unsurprisingly, an awkward glitch pops up every once in a while when it comes to Oscar 2017 mix-up rates.
Here are four more awards with unfortunate mistakes like getting mixed up with the 2017 Oscar:
Michael Jackson accepts a non-existent award at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards
The King of Pop has certainly received many accolades and awards during his lifetime, so this confusion is a little easier to understand, although understanding it doesn’t make it any less awkward.
Michael Jackson actually accepted a non-existent award at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. In 2002, MTV’s VMAs were held on Michael’s birthday, and in a sweet gesture, he was called onto the stage to receive a birthday cake. Britney Spears was the one who called him onto the stage, and adding to other gushing remarks, the singer had said she considered him the “artist of the millennium”.
Michael Jackson would then come on stage and give a full acceptance speech recognizing and also explaining God, his mother, Diana Ross and the magician David Blaine and others;
“When I was a little boy growing up in Indiana, if someone told me that one day as a musician I would get the Artist of the Millennium Award, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Mistranslation crowns Katy Perry in a category destined for Rihanna
In 2009 the French NRJ Music Awards took place in CannesKaty Perry accepted the award for the best international song. However, she had to give up the award when it was announced that the gong would go to Rihanna. Apparently, Katy Perry won the Best International Album category for her album One of the Boys, which must have eased her embarrassment considerably.
The best song award was given to the wrong winner at the 2016 Mobo Awards
In this epic mix-up, the wrong group must maintain their victor status for a full hour before it’s taken away. R&B trio WSTRN were mistakenly titled In2 for Best Song at the 2016 Mobo Awards. The actual winner in the category was Abra Cadabra for his song Robbery with Krept & Konan.
Hosts Rickie Williams and Melvin Odoom announced the error, which explained that “someone picked up the wrong envelope,” and was later apologized by organizers. They said: “In over 20 years of live television we have never made such a mistake but due to human error the wrong winner for Best Mobo Song was announced tonight. “
Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe goofy
When confused with the 2017 Oscar, there were so many people who immediately compared it to Steve Harvey’s hapless Miss Universe 2015 sucker. Steve Harvey had hosted the competition and mistakenly announced the wrong winner. The winner’s sash and crown went to Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, who was Miss Universe in the tiny moment before Steve Harvey announced a terrible mistake had been made. The crown was then placed on the head of Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
