20. Wizards of Waverly Place

  • IMDB Rating: 6.9/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
  • Common Sense Media: 3/5
  • Actors: Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, David DeLuise, Maria Canals-Barrera

Remember the time when Selena Gomez was not this massive singing sensation? You definitely went through a nostalgic ride, if you do. She was a household name during her teenage days through her iconic TV show ‘The Wizards of the Waverly Place.’

It is a rare gem in the TV wasteland. This show is exceptionally well written, cast, and performed. This program is for you if you enjoy subtly humorous “inside joke” humor. However, it also performs more than enough overtly physical humor to captivate younger and simpler viewers. For instance, BAXTER KNIGHT, a fumbling weatherman, appears in one episode. This connection will be completely lost on 99% of the viewing population since few were born prior to 2000. It is a humorous homage to Ted Baxter, who was played by Ted Knight on the Mary Tyler Moore Show more than 30 years ago.

You can find it appealing on both a very basic and a highly sophisticated level. Even today, young children who saw this program then have a completely new understanding of it on the whole another level. The entire cast is enjoyable to watch, but Selena Gomez deserves special recognition because she is an absolute delight. This young lady excels as a singer and an actress. She is also a great sweetheart and deserves every bit of future success that she is certain to experience.

19. Surviving “Death”

  • IMDB rating: 6.2
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 80%
  • Common Sense Media: 3/5
  • Actors: Mary Neal, Bruce Greyson, Jim Tucker, Peter Fenwick

It does really sound very woo-woo on paper, but Surviving “Death” introduces us to mediums who think they can communicate with the demised people who have survived near-passing away encounters and others who say they are the reincarnations of long-demised actors, pilots, or even murder victims over the course of six-hour-long episodes.

But here’s the thing: Ricki Stern, the show’s director, is a self-described skeptic. This means that everyone who appears in the documentary was chosen because they make incredibly strong arguments for awareness existing after the end of life as we know it.

This series, which is both intriguing and 100% spooky as hell, is a mix of talking-head documentaries and instructional programming. It works great at providing goosebumps since each person’s account of their encounter is so sincere. It offers an unshakeable attitude that is both extremely frightening and hard to argue with, and it also includes medical professionals and other academics.

18. Ghost Hunters

  • IMDB Rating: 6.3/10
  • Common Sense Media: 3/5
  • Actors: Jason Hawes, Steve Gonsalves, Dave Tango, Grant Wilson

American paranormal and reality television program Ghost Hunters had 230 episodes over eleven seasons, not counting ten specials. Thereafter, it was canceled, and only a few months later, it was brought back for its fourteenth season on Discovery+, which premiered on October 31, 2021. Season 15 of Travel Channel premiered on October 1st, 2022.

The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) team of paranormal investigators, which Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson created, was featured in the episode. TAPS look into areas that are rumored to be haunted.

He and his partner both worked during the day as plumbers for Roto-Rooter and at night as ghost hunters. The resurrected show featured Wilson and a new investigative team in its 12th and 13th seasons, even though it continued to use the same format, employ the same producers, and make references to earlier episodes. Hawes and the 2016 iteration of TAPS were back for the show’s fourteenth season, but Wilson and the new crew were not.

Among Syfy’s reality shows, Ghost Hunters boasts some of the greatest ratings. The show has always garnered viewership for its blend of human drama and paranormal inquiry. Since then, it has been syndicated on the NBC Universal cable channel Oxygen and also airs on the OLN network in Canada.

The American fantasy adventure drama television series ‘Once Upon a Time’ was broadcast on ABC. It has seven seasons and aired from October 23, 2011, to May 18, 2018.

Because it is so excellent, this show does a superb job of presenting our favorite heroes and villains in a more darker light. The main characters are all fantastic, but some of the other folks they encounter are a touch dull and cause me to skip.

The fact that some of the plots seem to take too long to resolve, especially considering that each episode is just about 40 minutes long, is a drawback. But they do a terrific job with their characters. Regina, for example, definitely went from being the evil queen who wanted power to changing for the better as a result of her relationship with Robin. Like Emma and Henry, the other characters are likewise well-developed.

The rest of the primary characters, though, are less well-represented. Sure, we see snow and charming, but not a lot more of them. Since Ruby only received one episode to tell her narrative, the others received very little. But ultimately, this program is incredible since the advantages outweigh the drawbacks.

12. Emerald City

  • IMDB: 7.1/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 38%
  • Common Sense Media: 3/5
  • Actors: Adria Arjona, Stefanie Martini, Ana Ularu, Vincent D’Onofrio, Mido Hamada

Undoubtedly, there are those who dislike remakes and the reimagining of old favorites. But when it comes to The Wizard of Oz, which has been a great film, a subpar modern film, a play, a musical, a TV series, and more, are there really any people remaining in that camp?

Naturally, Emerald City is a reworking of L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz stories grows and enhances the mythology in their own particular manner. Fans of the original books and musical adaptations may or may not like some of these updates and modifications, but the production cannot be criticized for ambition, even if a large portion of its patchwork plot is ultimately too confusing.

The premise follows 20-year-old Dorothy Gale, who sets off to see the Wizard when a storm takes her from Lucas, Kansas, to the Land of Oz, not realizing that she is about to carry out a prophecy that would alter everyone’s lives forever.

11. His Dark Materials

10. The Magicians

  • IMDB: 7.6/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 91%
  • Common Sense Media: 4/5
  • Actors: Jason Ralph, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Stella Maeve

The Magicians is a Syfy-produced American fantasy television series based on Lev Grossman’s 2009 book of the same name.

This series’ misfits-turned-wizards storyline is firmly rooted in fantasy; fans of the genre will recognize many elements from Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia. In today’s fantasy-friendly environment, the cliché of young people becoming caught up in epic magical conflicts holds a lot of sways.

The high caliber of the source material for the show provides a strong framework for comparing tired ideas with more mature approaches to these issues.

The show has wisely transitioned its main characters from undergraduate to graduate students. This gives the protagonists more freedom to experiment, which is one of the things that distinguishes this young adult identity-crisis novel from the works of its forebears.

If the time it airs doesn’t make it clear that The Magicians is for older kids, it should be emphasized that the show’s central plot involves morally and ethically problematic choices and that sadness, and self-harm, are important plot points.

It’s ideally suited for older audiences because, as the main character Quentin warns in the opening episode, “Be warned: This quest is no mere children’s tale.”

9. Bewitched

  • IMDB: 7.6/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 24%
  • Common Sense Media: 3/5

The show was well-liked, and it garnered the second-best rating in America during its first season, spent the next three seasons in the top 10, and finished in eleventh place in seasons four and five.

It is still available on recorded media and in syndication around the globe.

Samantha, a stunning witch played by Elizabeth Montgomery, marries Darrin Stephens, a mortal. She complies with Darrin’s requests to live in a typical suburban housewife role, but her magical family objects to the union and frequently meddles in the couple’s affairs.

In many episodes, Darrin is the target of a spell whose consequences have disastrous ramifications on mortals like his boss, clients, parents, and neighbors.

The series has got mixed reviews from critics, receiving a score of 50 on Metacritic and 70% for the first season on Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus that the show is frequently campy fun and an exciting supernatural spectacle.

6. WandaVision

  • IMDB: 7.9/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 91%
  • Common Sense Media: 4/5
  • Actors: Elizabeth Olsen, Evan Peters, Kathryn Hahn, Kat Dennings

WandaVision masterfully captures Wanda’s anguish, and trauma and sympathetically explains her past. The imaginative use of the many age aspects conveys Wanda’s love for Vision and her desire to spend a lifetime with him. In a way, these several decades fulfill her goal, which is both sad and lovely.

This show is brilliantly written and piques your interest right away. It has a more homey feel than any other Marvel film or television series, which is ideal for Wandavision because it makes you feel more connected to the characters.

The cast’s outstanding performances enhanced the script’s genius since they perfectly captured the mannerisms and catchphrases of people from that era.

Without giving anything away, WandaVision’s first two episodes are a lot of fun to watch! It is wonderful to finally see two MCU characters that hadn’t received much attention assume the spotlight and blossom. The final seven episodes will be exciting to watch as the mystery develops.

  • IMDB: 4.7/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 71%
  • Common Sense Media: 3/5
  • Actors: Kiernan Shipka, Gavin Leatherwood, Ross Lynch, Chance Perdomo

Based on the same-named Archie comic book series, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a Netflix original supernatural horror series from the United States.

The fictional town of Greendale serves as the setting for the show. It’s a macabre coming-of-age tale filled with terror, fear, and witchcraft. While battling the evil forces that endanger her, her family, and the world in which people live in the daylight, Sabrina Spellman must come to terms with her dual existence as a half-mortal, half-witch.

Her innate goodness, her resistance to evil, and her love for her aunts and her human friends, the crafty Rosalind, the extraordinary Susie/Theo, and charming Harvey, of course, are what make this program and Sabrina’s narrative so intensely captivating and enchanting.

Despite being a witch and a descendant of Satan, she remains true to herself and the principles of kindness, justice, and love that her aunts instilled in her throughout the three seasons.

She also stands up fearlessly for herself when bullied or confronted with a challenge, whether it be the dark lord or Lilith. In fact, every main character in this program has a ferocious personality in addition to a touching backstory, which is precisely why I enjoyed it.

2. Charmed

  • IMDB: 7.1/10

The story of Charmed start with Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell joining forces six months after the passing of their maternal grandmother. The three sisters decide to return to their family in Manor in San Francisco after giving it some thought. The Book of Shadows was an old book that the youngest sister, Phoebe, found in the attic while prowling about.

She accidentally set in motion circumstances that resulted in the fulfillment of an old prophecy by reading an incantation from it. The sisters eventually come to the conclusion that they are witches as a result of a series of bizarre and terrifying events.

1. The Worst Witch

  • IMDB: 7.2/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 100%
  • Common Sense Media: 4/5
  • Actors: Jenny Richardson, Bella Ramsey, Megan Hughes, Tamara Smart

The big-budget 2017 revival of The Worst Witch, produced by CBBC and currently available on Netflix, makes no attempt to draw from the series’ goofy past. Instead, author Emma Reeves has transformed Murphy’s classic work into something contemporary and opulent, adapting the story’s enduring theme of the outsider for a young audience growing up in a turbulent moment of socioeconomic upheaval.

Being the only student at Miss Cackle’s who is not of magical descent, Mildred experiences constant prejudice from both classmates and teachers, exposing the erroneous meritocratic framework of a society that places value primarily on magical prowess. The most recent Mildred is more than just clumsy; in contrast to the books and movies, our protagonist is now more distinguished by her culture shock than by her clumsiness.

The plot of the story revolves around a young girl named Mildred Hubble (Fairuza Balk) who attends a prominent witch academy. She is teased by her friends and teachers since she never seems to get anything properly. Miss Cackle, the school’s headmistress, is played by Charlotte Rae, and she has an evil twin sister named Agatha who wants to obliterate the institution.
